When it comes to working with a general contractor on a construction project, what factors would impact your decision? For most, price and schedule are the biggest elements that affect their decision. Others look at experience of the contractor and the employees it has working on the project. And for some, designations like being a minority-owned business may play into the decision.

Most clients that work with Alcorn Construction recognize Chris Alcorn as the face of the company. As the company’s President, he still plays an integral part in many of our projects, keeping tabs on them as they follow our Proven Process from initial meetings, all the way through warranty walks. With that in mind, you might think that Chris is the majority stakeholder in the company. But in reality, Amy Alcorn is the company’s majority stakeholder, and not only that, she’s been heavily involved in the background since the beginning, ensuring the company operates efficiently and effectively.

Amy’s background speaks for itself. She’s a highly accomplished professional with more than two decades of experience in finance and accounting. Armed with that, Amy has proven herself invaluable as Alcorn Construction’s CEO, Vice President, Secretary and Treasurer, focusing on strategic planning and analysis, forecasting, vendor management, growth strategy development and risk management. And more recently, she took on a project to ensure the company realizes the benefits associated with being a woman-owned business – something it has been since day one.

Being a woman-owned business means that Alcorn Construction qualifies for special programs and projects aimed at encouraging and empowering women business owners. And to become certified, Amy went through the process of gathering all of the materials needed to complete the Women’s Business Enterprise National Council application for certification. In November 2019, after many months of work, she received word that it was official. Alcorn Construction has successfully met the WBENC’s standards as a Women’s Business Enterprise, and they officially recognize Alcorn Construction as a woman-owned, operated and controlled company.

With a certificate in hand from a WBENC, we’ve never been prouder that Alcorn Construction is a woman-owned business. Everyone – from Amy and Chris, to our project managers and superintendents – recognize the value this certification will bring to the company, and we’re looking forward to the new projects we will realize by having it!
